No job cuts at France Telecom

France Telecom chief financial officer Gervais Pellissier has denied rumours that job cuts are afoot.

Speaking on a conference call of the company's Q1 results on Wednesday Pellissier said, as quoted by Dow Jones Newswires: "We have no plans to cut jobs, contrary to what some press reports said."

The French incumbent posted a decline in earnings and in revenue for the first quarter, but cheered investors by reiterating its full-year guidance. A detailed look at France Telecom's latest results can be found here:

Egyptian intrigue

The public spat between France Telecom and Orascom Telecom over their jointly owned Egyptian mobile unit Mobinil has had us all tearing our hair out over the past few weeks, largely because Mobinil's uber-complex ownership structure made the situation so difficult to follow.

But Total Telecom has untangled the complexities and stripped out the legalese, to bring you a comprehensive timeline of events and analysis of the situation.

The Mobinil debacle is the central focus of this week's Regional Review (suggestions for a sexier title gratefully received!), a new service from Total Telecom. Each week we will round up the key stories from one of our coverage regions - we started with the Middle East & Africa - to provide our readers with a better understanding of what's happening where.

It's a free service... and you don't even need to log in to read it (if you check it out in the next seven days).

Total Telecom has always been a global publication. Now we're using that base to bring you better insight into world news and events than ever before.

MTS launches Armenia 3G network

MTS on Monday launched Armenia's first 3G network.

The network will initially provide HSPA coverage in the country's three largest cities Guymri, Vanadzor and the capital Yerevan, although MTS plans to extend the network to additional cities throughout 2009.

"We are keen on playing our part in developing the telecommunications infrastructure in [Armenia] and offering consumers new products and services," said a statement from Oleg Raspopov, VP of foreign subsidiaries at MTS.

MTS said Armenia has low fixed-line penetration and lacks extensive infrastructure, so it's hoping its 3G network will tap into some pent-up demand for Internet services.

"We view our 3G network as an ideal vehicle to meet growing mobile broadband demand in Armenia and help stimulate further uptake in data and content services.

"Enterprise customers are starting to rethink their businesses," said Keith Cambron, president and CEO of AT&T Labs.

Who's afraid of the G20 protestors?

Walking down Bishopsgate this morning clearly not many people, except it seems our friends at the Carphone Warehouse - securely boarded up, but open.

Maybe it's nothing to do with the G20, maybe it's to fend off the rush for an exciting new handset? They were after all the only boarded up shop in sight.

I thought of asking some of the wannabe mob if Carphone was a key target, but since they were carrying the torso of a dress makers dummy, I thought better of it...
