7 Factors that contribute to a great place to work #BPTWAsia

There is much written about what makes a great place to work, but almost universally they agree that the key factor is engaged workers. As the votes come in for the Best Place to Work category for the 2014 Asia Communication Awards, we've looked around at what creates an environment of engaged workers.

One of the best articles I've seen on this is published by Forbes in their article How the Best Places to Work are Nailing Employee Engagement which lists 7 factors common to the best places to work:

• They understand what employees are thinking 
• They create an intentional culture
• They demonstrate appreciation for contributions big and small
• They commit to open, honest communication
• They support career path development
• They engage in social interactions outside work
• They know how to communicate the organization’s stories

These elements were certainly demonstrated by last years Best Place to Work in Asia winner, Idea Cellular and by the Highly Commended runner up, Smart Communications, so are they demonstrated by your employer?

Why must you be the Best Place to Work? #Engagement

The A-Z of telecom operators have been submitting responses for the 2013 Best Place to Work survey (#BPTW) but whilst almost every major operator from across the globe is represented, many do not have the necessary 50 employee responses to be in the running for the award.

So what makes employees want to complete a survey about their company? It certainly isn't the Total Telecom incentive (for the record - there isn't one), but it almost certainly is driven by the thorny issue of engagement.

Across the web there are experts and commentators talking about employee engagement and how it is vital for employers, but fundamentally you can summerise this by saying the best places to work have the most engaged employees, and this is because these are companies that understand and try to foster attributes including, but not limited to:

• trying to understand what employees think and feel
• demonstrating appreciation of the effort put in (not just money!)
• great communication
• commitment to employee development 

So in a world where up to 40% of employees are disengaged (BlessingWhite Research 2013) it makes sense for you to be one of the companies recognised as being a great place to work.

What makes you the Best Place to Work? #BPTW

Could your company be the Best Place to Work in telecoms? The survey is open for this years World Communication Awards, the second year this category has been awarded, last years winner being Zain Jordan.

But also since last year we have run this category at our Asia Communication Awards in Singapore, where in June, Idea Cellular were crowned the winner for the Asia region.

There is no cost associated with this category, but you must get responses from at least 50 employees from your company, which will then be assessed via a recognised system of Net Promoter Scores (NPS) to determine who offers the Best Place to Work in telecoms.

Best Place to Work is one of four categories where you can still participate for 2013, the others being:

>> Best Network Operation Initiative, a new category where the winning entry will be an initiative or service that demonstrably improves operational excellence within carrier network operations. The award winner will be a single telecom operators or a partnership between a single telecom operator and a vendor / SI / consultant. Entry deadline is the 31 July 2013.

>> The Users Choice Award where we seek the opinions of enterprise users of telecoms.

>> CEO of the Year - nominations are now closed - the voting will begin shortly!

Voted categories open #WCA13

The voted categories are now open for the 2013 World Communication Awards.

With the rise in popularity of the voted categories over the last few years, we expect to see even more participation for 2013, the 15th year of the prestigious World Communication Awards, and to ensure the competition is stronger than ever, we've been reviewing the assessment methods to ensure the most worth winners are named on the 3rd December 2013 at the awards dinner.

For success in the voted categories you need to enlist the assistance of your staff and clients, so don't delay, start working on them today:

1. CEO of the Year - one of the most prestigious of all categories, won last year by Vittorio Colao, Vodafone [watch his acceptance video here]. This category relies first on nominations and then on a public vote. In the first instance, start nominating if you want your CEO to be in the running. NOMINATE HERE

2. Best Place to Work - launched in 2012, this category has been refined for 2013 with the emphasis firmly on the opinions of those who know - your employees. The winner is determined based on net promoter scores, and to be assessed you need at least 50 responses. ENCOURAGE YOUR STAFF TO COMPLETE THE SURVEY

3. The Users' Choice - now in it's 5th year, this is a research based category with studies carried out in parallel by Total Telecom and our partners at Ocean82. Winning this category is particularly valued by operators, as it is the views of their enterprise customers that count. WHY NOT SHARE THE SURVEY WITH YOUR ENTERPRISE CLIENTS.
