From technological backwater to the world's most important sector #WCA

Total Telecom is moving office, and whilst we cleared boxes and moving piles of rubbish (what happened to the paperless office) we came across our heritage, or to be exact in a cupboard we found an archive of back issues of CommunicationsWeek International and Communications International - the titles that later became Total Telecom.

Amongst the dust stood out an October 1999 issue of CommunicationsWeek International proudly revealing World Communication Awards, names such as Global One, Arbinet Communications, and World Online (ouch!)
the first ever winners of the

Why not revel in some nostalgia (we certainly did) and check out the names and services from the past - whilst trying to explain to the younger members of your team who they were! Remember Arthur Andersen - our headline sponsor in 1999....

6 Companies who probably don't remember their first Tweet? #WCA14

Do you remember your first Tweet? Most people probably don't and indeed most companies probably don't, so with a gratuitous link to this years World Communication Awards (entries opened this week) we decided to use Twitters Discover tool to see what the first Tweet was of 6 notable companies - the Best Global Operator finalists from 2013.

So starting at the top, with last year's winner, Orange Business Services, who even in 2009 were concerned by data protection.

Orange have since clearly worked hard at their Twitter account +orangebusiness and have 107,000 followers and according to @tweetstats produce an average 207 tweets per month, getting replies to over 27% of them - clearly the work of a leader!

The first tweets of the rest of the shortlist are in the slidedeck below:

So practising what we preach, what about @totaltelecom? We produced our first Tweet way back in January 2009, proving our cutting edge credentials, beating all of the above bar AT&T, but in classic Total Telecom style, the subject was a less serious "Merry Christmas & Happy New Year"...

7 Factors that contribute to a great place to work #BPTWAsia

There is much written about what makes a great place to work, but almost universally they agree that the key factor is engaged workers. As the votes come in for the Best Place to Work category for the 2014 Asia Communication Awards, we've looked around at what creates an environment of engaged workers.

One of the best articles I've seen on this is published by Forbes in their article How the Best Places to Work are Nailing Employee Engagement which lists 7 factors common to the best places to work:
    • They understand what employees are thinking
    • They create an intentional culture
    • They demonstrate appreciation for contributions big and small
    • They commit to open, honest communication
    • They support career path development
    • They engage in social interactions outside work
    • They know how to communicate the organization’s stories

These elements were certainly demonstrated by last years Best Place to Work in Asia winner, Idea Cellular and by the Highly Commended runner up, Smart Communications, so are they demonstrated by your employer?

If you want your employer to be in contention, all you need to do is complete the quick survey that Total Telecom have hosted and give us your views before the 2 May 2014. Ask your colleagues to take part too, as each company needs to generate 50 responses to be considered.

The winner will be revealed at the 4th annual Asia Communication Awards in Singapore on the 19th June 2014 - it's the last night of CommunicAsia, so come along and join the party!

Will the real WCA please stand up #WCA13

It has come to our attention that there may be some confusion over which awards WCA refers to, so we want to add some clarity so you can reassure yourself you were at the World Communication Awards.

    A few simple tests:

    1. Did any of the finalists include the Bleating Heart, Cropwell Bishop Creamery, or Two Hoots Cheese? If so, there is a strong possibility that you were at the World Cheese Awards [http://worldcheeseawards.com] where the winners included Gruyère Premier Cru, Blue Stilton and Fat Bottom Girl!

    2. If every award was won by Tunisia, and the evening degenerated into a fight, you were probably at the (possibly fictional) World Countries Awards

    3. If you enjoyed great company of hundreds of fellow telecom professionals from around the world, entertainment from the spectacular choir and saw companies including AT&T, Orange Business Services and Tata Communications named as winners, relax you were at the World Communication Awards!
