What are the real requirements for IPX

IP eXchange or IPX is one of the hot topics today and will be the subject of a 1 day Total Telecom conference on the 10 October.

But what do customers really think about IPX? Our partners at Hot Telecom have put together a report based on interviews with 70 customers to give you some insight.

    The report covers:

    • Define the current status of service providers' IP migration as a whole
    • Validate what service providers understand of IPX and how they define it
    • Identify the services and features customers really need and want
    • Determine what is important for customers when choosing their IPX providers
    • Understand what are the main factors delaying the use of IPX for operators not already using it and what makes migration difficult
    • Define the differences in service providers' opinions and needs based on their region of operation and core service offering
So if you are serious about the IPX opportunity, buy the report and come along to the Total Telecom IPX Summit

    C-ing The Light

It's musical chairs for the CxO's with Luis Alvarez appointment at BT Global Services arguably the biggest news, but we've also seen Mario Rossi named as the new CFO at Swisscom and Telefónica European head José María Álvarez-Pallete promoted to chief operating officer.

There's a common language to the appointments with BT talking of an "important juncture for BT Global Services", Swisscom a "broader push to overhaul the telco's senior management" and  Telefónica  looking to create an organisational structure that would be “stable over time and ready to compete internationally”. Fundamentally this reflects telco's looking to better their current performance, but not just in terms of revenues and profits, but also in terms of financial market perception.

This is a key driver for the operators who are constantly looking to reassure the markets and is an area that will be discussed in the Financial Markets session of the Total Telecom Finance Summit. During this session two leaders, Standard & Poor's and Fitch Ratings will offer a credit ratings perspective of how to keep the market onside.

If this is a discussion that matters to you, then make sure you book your place at the Finance Summit before the 21 September to guarantee the best possible price. With participants already confirmed from operators including AT&T, BT Global Services, Cell C, Colt, du, Easynet, Everything Everywhere, Interoute, Orange, Swisscom, Telecom Italia, Telstra Global, Turk Telecom, Verizon, and Virgin Media, you'll be in excellent company! From Russia with Love #FinanceSummit

OK, so we can't promise Mr Bond, but at the Total Telecom Finance Summit on the 10 & 11 October you can meet Henk van Dalen, the CFO of leading Russian operator, VimpelCom.

His keynote on the morning of day 1 provides provides a futuristic vision of the telecom finance and investment landscape in 2013 and beyond, something he's well qualified to comment on considering that in July alone VimpelCom have announced several major and innovative initiatives. These include:

    • a global M2M alliance with partners at KPN, NTT Docomo, Rogers, SingTel, Telefonica, and Telstra aimed at increasing their capability to offer better value propositions to their customers in different markets and geographies.
    • have won one of four wins LTE licenses in Russia
This type of initiative is illustrative of the type of experiences you will be able to hear about and discuss at the Finance Summit, living up to the strapline of "Best practice finance strategies for global telecoms".

To find out more about the Summit and speakers, visit www.totaltele.com/financesummit

    Disruptive Notes: M-Commerce

    Infographic from BigCommerce
There's a nice infographic from online commerce provider, BigCommerce. It poses the question of whether M-Commerce will overtake E-Commerce and whilst most people in the telco space probably think they know the answer to this, the stats included are nicely presented.

It's also ties in nicely to our theme of Disruption for Total Telecom World - changing the way people shop is both a challenge and an opportunity for the telecom operator and is certainly going to impact the future of communications as we know it today.

There's also a major issue surround the customer experience, so come and ask us about our Customer Experience Summit - day 2 of Total Telecom World.

UK finally gets LTE !! UK Broadband first to launch TD-LTE Network

UK Broadband, the PCCW owned company on Wednesday switched on its TD-LTE Infrastructure, becoming the first organisation in the UK to do so. Not only that, it also became the first-TD LTE network worldwide to operate in the 3.5GHz spectrum band.
The network, based on equipment provided by Huawei is mainly for demo purposes as the company seeks to attract potential customers, however its rollout plan will see it build additional network in areas where customers require 4G LTE, with a commercial launch slated for May this year
Nicholas James, CEO of UK Broadband, was quoted in an article published on www.totaltele.com this week, by Mary Lennighan as saying “we will be announcing a city build in a couple of weeks”, he also went on to mention that “by June of next year” UK Broadband would be launching a Huawei Smartphone that will run both on its frequency and in the 2.6GHz band, as well as on standard 3G networks to provide full coverage.
The company also stated that many potential wholesale customers are waiting in the wings to test out the new network, having waited for a few years to see what UK Broadband would do with its sizeable spectrum holdings. The announcement brings the UK another step closer to the launch of 4G LTE internet.
Total Telecom is delighted that UK Broadband will be sponsoring at Breakfast with Total Telecom’s LTE opportunities event on the 14th of March, in London. CTO, Philip Marnick will be speaking at the event for the first time, post UK Broadband’s announcement on Wednesday at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, with further insight into the company’s plans for its LTE network.
With industry experts from Virgin Media, GSMA, iBasis, Ovum and Jones Day also speaking at the breakfast, do not miss the opportunity to be part of this event and join in on the discussion. Registration is free for operators/service providers and carriers, availability is limited so now is the best chance to confirm your participation. Rumour Watch - Snow interrupts Singapore Conference

Today in Singapore, it is 26 degrees, but Total Telecom hears that there may have been a gap in the agenda of the TM Forums Management World Asia, due to snow.

In a city where the lowest ever recorded temperature is 17 degrees celcius this may sound unlikely, but we have it on good authority that amongst those heading for Singapore this weekend from the UK was the CEO of the TM Forum, Martin Creaner - the man due to give the keynote Rethinking Communications at 9:10 on day 1.

Total Telecom assume a directive was offered to the assembled telecom executives of talk quietly amongst themselves, whilst 6,000 miles away the agenda was no doubt Rethinking Transportation....

We hope we won't have to do any snow contingency plans in June, when we will run the 2nd annual Asia Communication Awards in Singapore. Entry deadline 16 March 2012, FIND OUT MORE
