Ask Juniper - What makes a great white paper
Looking at our annual round-up of the most popular white papers of the year, it's clear Juniper Networks can answer better than most what makes them work.No fewer that four of the top ten most viewed white paper summaries in 2013 were produced by the vendor, so they clearly take the prize. However, the gong for the Best White Paper title must surely go to Tyntec?
So who makes the grade?

Did you have cake? #Skype
Last week Skype celebrated it's 9th Birthday. It was described by commentator Andy Abramson as the "the single most disruptive service ever to hit the telecommunications world" but what next for Skype now it's part of the Microsoft juggernaut?
A recent article from Gigaom speculates on some of the features and places we might see Skype appearing, but for a more focused discussion you might want to join in the discussion with @totaltelecom during our Disruption Eruption conference in November. Here you'll meet representatives of all kinds of OTT players, including a keynote from Andreas Bernstrom, Chief Executive at Rebtel, who are arguably Skype's biggest rival.
Historically of course VoIP services like Skype have run via desktop computers, but the move to enabling them over any device is front of mind. Tony Bates, president of the Skype Division of Microsoft spoke to USA Today and said addressing people adopting BYOD was their number one priority.
This is therefore an interesting fit with an increasing number of mobile operators who are seeking to improve their user experience by using Wi-Fi for competitive advantage. Indeed The New York Times recently wrote an article on the lessons from the London Olympics, highlighting the Benefits of Free Wi-Fi and this will no doubt be a subject for the Customer Experience Summit that Total Telecom are organising on the 14 November 2012.
Total Telecom World - the Disruption Eruption conference, takes place in London on the 13th November 2012. It is followed by a one day focused Customer Experience Summit on the 14 November. On the evening of the 13th November, you are invited to join up to 600 of the most senior executives from the telecom industry at the 14th annual World Communication Awards.
Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery #disruptioneruption
There was a great article in The Economist recently "Joyn them or join them" looking at how mobile operators are trying both to repel and to imitate the OTT suppliers.
This is of course exactly the stance of this years Total Telecom World "Disruption Eruption" conference and so it's especially interesting to see The Economist referencing a number of the companies that will be speaking at our event, including Rebtel (CEO, Andreas Brenstrom is speaking) and TuMe. From Telefonica Digitals TuMe we have Jamie Finn whose previous credits include Chief Fire Stoker @ The Lab!
The Economist article is well worth a read and is available online as well as in print, but if you really want to get undfer the skin of this subject, come to Total Telecom World on the 13 November - register now to save!
Paving the Way #DisruptionEruption
What happens when an OTT player diversifies? Someone goes Over the Top. In this case literally. Much has been made of Google's fibre project in Kansas City, but now one budding entrepreneur is looking to utilise the much vaunted new network to enable embed sensors in pavement slabs to capture data about potentially hazardous roadway conditions, such as cracks, potholes and traffic jams. The WSJ carried the story of Integrated Roadways LLC.
Also spotted this week (via engadget), the US MVNO Ting - famed for it's aggressive flexible price plans has done a deal to offer users the Samsung Galaxy SIII. That's sure to give traditional players some-Ting to think about!
These and other disruptive and innovative ideas are just the type of story we want you to hear about at Total Telecom World.
The Future of Communications #OTT
What's the future of communications? That's the central question that will be posed by the second annual Total Telecom World summit in November, and instead of the usual raft of companies hypothesising on what it might be, we're going to show you.
This year our theme is the Disruption Eruption and we're are bringing together a line up of speakers that are actually challenging the status quo and who will change the face of the global communications industry.
The one day conference ahead of the 2012 World Communication Awards will examine key issues including:
This year our theme is the Disruption Eruption and we're are bringing together a line up of speakers that are actually challenging the status quo and who will change the face of the global communications industry.
The one day conference ahead of the 2012 World Communication Awards will examine key issues including:
- How OTT players are disrupting the market
- Operator Business Models
- What will the successful operator of the future look like
- Capitalising on big data and more
In an increasingly competitive market, it's time for the telco's to think out of the box, and our aim with Total Telecom World is to show what life outside the box looks.
To top the day off, the 14th annual World Communication Awards will take place in a different part of the same venue (Lancaster Hotel, London). Bringing together up to 600 of the most senior executives in the industry, there's clearly no group better qualified to discuss the future of communications!
DISRUPTIVE NOTES: Camille Mendler of Ovum recently picked up on a similar theme with her post "Telcos: Want to fight OTT?" - drawing an interesting parallel of disruption that telecom operators should be interested in. In this case we're seeing French rail operator SNCF launching bus services between Paris and London to compete with the low cost air carriers and the like. SNCF is of course now headed by Barbara Dalibard (ex-Orange BS) so their experiences should perhaps be especially pertinent to the telecoms industry.
A more balanced view of mobile issues #TTWW12
Total Telecom Wireless World is less than three weeks away and is not to be missed if you want a more balanced view of the key issues that are changing the industry forever. In one corner we bring together the true disrupters, Google leading the pack of OTT players, whilst in the other we have the traditional telcos who are reinventing the way mobile business is done.
TEN THINGS YOU WILL LEARN:
- What did China Telecom learn launching an MVNO
- Who is tomorrows consumer - Googles View
- How does the Internet of Things impact operators
- How will networks evolve in the future
- What services will drive the mass market take up of 4G?
- How can operators capitalise on mobile video
- Where are the emerging market opportunities
- How is (BYOD) changing the relationship with the user
- How can businesses offset increasing complexity in IT
- Which wireless technologies are going to win
Don't miss your chance to join leading global telecom operators, OTT players, analysts, commentators and more as we debate the catalysts for this change in the Wireless World...
