Good news for hackers - security is just 3.4% of telco IT budget #FutureSecurity

According to the Global State of Information Security® Survey 2014, published by PwC, average telco info security budgets rose 35% last year over 2012, and whilst this shows a clear commitment from the industry to taking security seriously, it is still only a pitiful 3.4% of total IT spending.

Considering the report also illustrates quite clearly that security incidents happen across the network and outside of the network (see the breadth of stories covered by Total Telecom), it is clear that it's about time for the telecom industry to treat security with the commitment it deserves, addressing all aspects of security and risk in a single discussion as part of one issue.

Steam Powered Networks

The London Underground celebrated 150 years this week by running a steam train three and a half miles from Paddington to Farringdon - the original extent of the network.

It's great parallel for the telecom industry because the issues are similar, not just the extreme of running   the steam train (a legacy 'device') through one of the most modern nodes on the network (the new St Pancras only opened in 2009) but at a more basic level the everyday network management issues.

The London Underground is one of the oldest in the world and every day struggles with capacity bottle necks; it carries 1,107 million passengers a year. It's also not a single network, with the different lines being built not just in different years, but different decades and even centuries with some lines - such as the Jubilee having the most modern infrastructure on the network with platform edge doors, but then interconnecting with some of the oldest parts of the network.

The parallels continue as you consider the alternative forms of interaction (links to bus, overground, taxi), the ways of connectivity (foot tunnel, bridge, escalator), customer interface (ticket barriers, ticket windows, doors), monitoring (control rooms, platform supervisors) etc etc...

Doesn't this remind you of a telecom network? And just like the Underground, telecom operators can't just toss away the legacy and start again, and indeed according to ETNO operators [in Europe] have no plans to seek simplification by creating a single network.

All this no doubt explains why 2013 is going to be the year of Network Management and why newly published research from Total Telecom shows 96% of telecom professionals rate network management as very important or critical and why 80% say it is of growing importance. One final thought from the underground, they said the London Underground would never work - that's a bit like a telecom network as well...

The data tsunami is coming - you need to manage it #TTNMS

Ofcom have predicted that demand for mobile data in the UK could grow by 80 times by 2030 resulting in a capacity crunch for mobile networks.

To head this off, Ofcom plan to release more radio spectrum and are advocating better use of wi-fi. The also are pointing out the need for new transmission and compression technologies and say there will not be a problem if all these actions are followed through.

Ofcom are calming public nerves saying there will be no problem, but for enterprise and operators it is crucial that they don't leave this to chance, and ensure maximum efficiency in their networks - this is why Total Telecom has launched the Network Management Show...

Then stakes are high with a whole raft of new players emerging as the leaders in network management, such as Meraki, the three year old start up acquired by Cisco for $1.2 billion.

DIY, BYOD, the new corporate strategy?

So whose phone do you use? Your employers or your own? In this months Total Telecom+, Nick Wood talks about the growing trend to Bring Your Own Device (BYOD)

Amongst the conclusions is a quote from Gartner vice president Nick Jones. “BYO is a principle that most organisations will adopt and organisations must prepare for this change.” If he's right then operators really need to jump on board to realise the opportunity to generate revenues from ‘bring your own device’

Google #Cloud: a threat to Amazon or a threat to you?

Yesterday the Google enterprise blog unveiled a raft of new Cloud assets aimed at enterprise market place and was reported by various parts of the press as gunning for Amazon web services.

Whilst this may be true, once again this underlines the threat that the likes of Google pose to the traditional telecom industry, offering over-the-top services at no doubt competitive prices, but more importantly leveraging the enormous strength of the Google marketing infrastructure and making the entire proposition seem user friendly and simple with a typically clean proposition page.

Telecom operators are still not getting to grips with their cloud propositions and others are eating their breakfast, lunch, and dinner!

And it's not just Google. yesterday IBM strengthened its private cloud proposition through the purchase of Platform Computing, whilst the Total Telecom press release feed is awash with releases relating to Cloud initiatives, mostly from vendor companies.

However the opportunity for the telcos is clear. At a recent conference in Rome it was flagged that reliability tops enterprise concerns about the cloud and this opens the way to a terrific opportunity for the telecom operators. OTT providers cannot guarantee the reliability of the network, whilst telcos are far better placed to offer this reassurance.

Without doubt this is at the core of the debate and will be central to the discussion at the Breakfast with Total Telecom Next Generation Cloud Services discussion on the 6 December.
