The Dynamic Dozen - 12 Whitepapers You Should Have Read

Every year Total Telecom starts looking at what people have read during the year, including
the whitepapers and eBooks that have stimulated the greatest interest.

We measure this based on views of the synopsis, and for 2014 see that LTE / 4G tops the interest area, followed by security, IPX, cloud and small cells.

Last week on Total Telecom demonstrated clearly just how diverse the telecom landscape has become. On one hand we see NTT DoCoMo announcing a partnership with no fewer than 6 vendors to explore 5G, whilst at the other end of the spectrum, Pakistan and Iraq are talking about 3G launches. This week we decided not just to look at the news stories you've been reading, but also at the press releases you've found interesting, and the white papers you have downloaded in the past 7 days, so the top ten is actually the Top 5 (news articles); Top 3 (press releases) and Top 2 (white papers).

Good news for hackers - security is just 3.4% of telco IT budget #FutureSecurity

According to the Global State of Information Security® Survey 2014, published by PwC, average telco info security budgets rose 35% last year over 2012, and whilst this shows a clear commitment from the industry to taking security seriously, it is still only a pitiful 3.4% of total IT spending.

Considering the report also illustrates quite clearly that security incidents happen across the network and outside of the network (see the breadth of stories covered by Total Telecom), it is clear that it's about time for the telecom industry to treat security with the commitment it deserves, addressing all aspects of security and risk in a single discussion as part of one issue.

Why #cloud isn't a compelling proposition

Reuters have reported on a recent cloud adoption survey by Symantec and have found few organisations are adopting cloud computing and that those that have are generally disappointed.

This is a worry for telecom operators, many of whom are viewing cloud as a great opportunity - as will be discussed by a panel including BT Wholesale, PCCW Global and Orange Business Services at Total Telecom World. However the findings also highlight were the opportunity lies for operators to address the issues and restore confidence. In a recent Carriers World interview with Total TeleVision, Rakesh Bhasin, CEO of COLT, flagged up issues including, ease of doing business, security, and understanding the customer, closely echoing the findings of the Symantec research.
