WCA Category spotlight: Best Brand Campaign

The World Communication Awards are just under a month away and we can’t hide our excitement!
With the biggest party in global telecoms almost here, Total Telecom will be putting together a series of category spotlights. Where each post will focus on a particular awards category, giving you with the key information you need to know about the categories, finalists and the awards. We’ll kick things off with the today with the Best Brand Campaign category.

Finalists
BT – BT Sport
Roshan – New Heights
EE Mobile – Biggest, Fastest, Best
Idea Cellular – Idea Internet All India
Ooredoo – Ooredoo
Orange – Go Europe
Smart Communications – Jump In

BT – BT Sport
BT Sport is BT’s new sport offering; three channels, BT Sport 1, BT Sport 2 and ESPN showing exclusive sports content including the Barclays Premier League, Aviva Rugby Premiership and Moto GP.
As well as just sport provision, they’ve also teamed up with high profile celebrity experts such as Claire Balding, Brian O’Driscoll and Jake Humphrey, offering the very best in broadcasting and helping the BT to its best year-on-year business performance in 10 years.

Roshan – New Heights
Brand campaigns in Afghanistan are few and far between, with the majority of them focusing on products, promotions or services. Roshan, did the unthinkable and launched the ‘New Heights’ campaign, celebrating 10 years of operations in Afghanistan, and the part they’ve played in the rebuilding of the economic development of the country.
Focusing on television, Roshan created a 60-second television commercial, illustrating the emotion the region- including its socioeconomic impact on jobs, finance and education, tugging at the viewership’s heartstrings. All in all, celebrating what customers and the country can do with mobile and how Afghanistan as a whole has reached ‘New Heights’.

EE Mobile – Biggest, Fastest, Best
Ahead of 4G launches from rival companies EE launched ‘Biggest, Fastest, Best’. A campaign demonstrating the commercial success and industry-leading capabilities of its network, with its world leading speeds and amazing coverage of the British population.
Making use of viral videos, #SuperfastSarnie Twitter challenge completion and of course television and cinema adverts. Not forgetting teaming up with Hollywood A-List actor Kevin Bacon to really legitimise the brand image.

Idea Cellular – Idea Internet All India
The 3rd largest mobile operator in India, launched the ‘Idea Internet All India’ campaign to build the category of mobile internet services in India.
The campaign builds on a simple cultural insight – “in India, people easily fall prey to everyday small cons for lack of information”. Internet is a great information leveller and Idea used this insight to drive the message. The Big Idea was- “India mein ab No Ullu banaoing”, meaning “now no one can make a fool of anyone in India”. The communication ended with the message “Idea Internet All India” dramatized by the catchphrase “har mobile par internet, what an idea!” (English: Internet on every mobile, what an idea!).

Ooredoo – Ooredoo
The Ooredoo brand was launched during the GSMA Mobile World Congress 2013 in order to deliver maximum impact and the launch saw a series of renowned speakers such as Cherie Blair and Dr. Hamadoun Toure of ITU take part.
Ooredoo wanted to unleash the potential of its customers throughout the group to go beyond simply connecting people to helping people achieve their full potential and supporting human growth in all its dimensions. Overall, Ooredoo recognises the potential of communications to transform lives by empowering people– and that supported the choice of the new brand and name.

Orange – Go Europe
‘Go Europe’ is a series of new roaming offers that Orange started offering in 2013 to simplify roaming charges for customers in Europe and are designed specifically to instill confidence in customers by guaranteeing that there will be no surprises.
At a time of phenomenal innovation in the telecoms market, the issue of roaming continues to be a sore spot for the industry due to a historical legacy of customers who have faced unexpectedly large bills.
With this in mind, Orange wanted to drive customer adoption of its roaming services up by making them more affordable and eradicating the associated fear of running up large bills. Simplicity and transparent pricing.

Smart Communications – Jump In
The Jump In campaign was aimed to encourage the youth to “Jump In,” to go for their dreams and embrace change – such as a change in cellular networks – that would enable them to “Live More,” in line with Smart’s overarching brand campaign.
The campaign had to make Smart relevant to them while establishing that it is young and cool, and that it spoke their language. Jump In sparked record-breaking buzz and online conversations for the brand, making it one of the most talked about launches of 2013.

To find out who will win Best Brand Campaign then you need to book your place for the World Communication Awards now. Keep an eye out for more Category Spotlights on The Editor’s Cut.

4 levels of service driving the #IPX market

Total Telecom research suggests IPX is now starting to become a reality with 50% of operators surveyed suggesting they intend to start utilising IPX in 2014. As more of you complete the survey, the picture will become more conclusive, but we thought thought this table from Innovation Observatory gave a clear indication of the mix of services making up the IPX market.

In such as fast growing space, it's not a surprise that we're seeing an upturn in interest in our second IPX Summit, which takes place in London on the 24 & 25 September, and already we have support from Orange as a sponsor of this years conference

The event will bring together parties interested in how they can capitalise on IPX as well as discussing some of the key issues of on International interconnectivity and roaming, sure to be front of mind with operators.

If you haven't done so yet, please take a couple of minutes to take the IPX Survey, and if you are a mobile operator you may qualify for a free place at the summit, worth £1,425

The agenda for this years #CarriersWorld, the first to be organised by Total Telecom has just gone online and you'll notice the change. There's definitely a new variety in the speakers and the topics and many more networking opportunities to provide increased relevance to the wholesale carrier community.

Indeed it interesting to watch this video he made a couple of years ago "How To Sell To The High Street".

Of course we haven't ignore the big names like Beatriz Butsana-Sita (B.T.), David Jan Aris (Liberty Global) and Mike Millegan (Verizon) - who Total Telecom interviewed at a previous Carriers World (see below)

Everything Everywhere: telecom brand turmoil

Today Total Telecom publishes it's annual ranking of the top 50 operator brands (by value) in global telecommunications, and whilst Everything Everywhere doesn't feature as a brand, their influence is there for all to see.

This might be being a little unfair to EE as it is more of a case of Everything All-over-the-place as on one hand speculation mounts regarding the relative positioning of Orange and T-Mobile in the UK, whilst thousands of miles away, the actions of the Indian Supreme Court in calling re-auctioning of Mobile licences will hit some major international players, such as Telenor, Etisalat, and Vodafone - see this weeks Friday Review.

The top 50 global telecom operator brands includes numerous players engulfed in turmoil, so it will be interesting to see if this impacts their brand value when we report next year, in particular whether this is another factor in play amongst the top three, Vodafone, AT&T, and Verizon.

>> The Brand Ranking is published in February Total Telecom+ <<

It's a wrap! Awards and Conference complete

The 13th annual World Communication Awards and first ever Total Telecom World conference are over for another year, so time to take a deep breath and relax. No chance, it's time to start working on Total Telecom Wireless World for June 2012!

Eighteen categories were awarded, with the highlights being the emergence of UPC Austria as the winner in two categories, Team of the Year and Best Customer Care, and the naming of Randall L. Stephenson of AT&T as CEO of the Year. Randall unfortunately was unable to make the awards, but did send us personal video message.

There is great press coverage of the awards this year, in particular the BBC were very quick off the mark to cover BT's win of Project of the Year for Superfast Cornwall.

Almost 500 people attended this years awards dinner at the London Hilton on Park Lane where Andrew Neil demonstrated just what makes him such a popular commentator and presenter with his unique blend of topical, humourous, and the slightly cutting - especially if you happen to work for Orange.  You can view all the winners and highly commended companies on the website at www.worldcommsawards.com

Many of those who attended the awards also participated in the inaugural Total Telecom World conference where they were moved and inspired by Karim Khoja's story of telecoms in Afghanistan, as well as getting great insight from Ed Richards, CEO of Ofcom and the opportunity to hear first hand from Nigel Stagg, the new CEO of BT Wholesale in his first conference presentation.

Panel discussions in particular were lively with candid views expressed by the likes of Jeremy Boardman of Rothschild (Any new UK fibre investors would be 'certifiable'), whilst David Haigh of Brand Finance was described by one participant as making the other panellists 'squirm'!

An eventful two days, when all's said and done...

Keep taking the #tablets

In the October issue of Total Telecom+, Nick Wood has taken a look at the world of tablet computing and how operators need to prove they are more than a bit part player in this arena.

It's an important battle because the electronics retailers are already making this market their own, not only offering the advantage of tablets without contracts, but also great variety. In the UK for example, Best Buy current offer a choice of 17 tablets whilst Vodafone's shop offers just the iPad and Samsung GALAXY.

However arguably the biggest challenge is the opportunity cost of not convincing the consumer. The operator is not seen as the default choice for tablets because the network contract is not essential. The FT recently reported that Apple currently generates almost 3/4 of tablet sales in the UK, but the majority of these use wi-fi and not 3G. That's already an issue, but a recent study by Intel predicts that by 2020 there will be 31 billion connected devices worldwide.

Just think of the boardroom tears if operators aren't getting their fair share of this...

The challenges facing the telecoms industry will be discussed on day-2 of Total Telecom World by speakers including Orange Business Services and Reliance Communications. Don't miss your chance to attend.

Everything Everywhere or Orange somewhere?

Brand Republic reports that Everything Everywhere has set out it's brand strategies for Orange and T-Mobile.

Interestingly it's all about differentiating the brand and what they stand for. So having spent years turning everything Orange, France Telecom forms a JV with DT, creating a new brand and then sets about differentiating the Orange brand from T-Mobile.

I can't help feeling this has echos of large professional services firms a few years ago seperating their auditing and consultancy businesses and then launching consultancy arms of their audit business.

Hopefully the eventual result will be more successful than the infamous 'Monday' saga, but since the company newsroom currently has two consecutive posts proclaiming differnt stores to be the first high street store branded Everything Everywhere, you can't help questioning the likely success...

Say Cheese

Flash bulbs welcomed the winners, cameras rolled, and Cornish Blue reigns supreme - apparently. A coincidence of timing meant attendees at the World Communication Awards tweeting hashtag #WCA were sharing a tag with the World Cheese Awards!

Despite this one minor glitch, and more generous use of the alternative #worldcommsawards, twitter has been alive with news of this years WCA, including the success of BT - you can catch up with the latest HERE

It was a great night all round, Mary Knightingale was a popular and effective host, whilst Big Ocean Bands really upped the tempo...

So all that remains is congratulations to all the winners, including the big winners on the night BT, Orange Business Services and Verizon. You can view the full list of winners on the website: www.worldcommsawards.com

Passion, Interest, and Scrap Yards

This weeks meeting of the World Telecoms Council brought together another strong group of participants from players including BT, Tata, Belgacom, Orange, UK Broadband, Tellabs and more.

Debate was always interesting and as this strip of images of Nicholas Topham (BroadGroup) leading a session, observed by Joe Kelly (BT Wholesale) illustrates - sometimes impassioned!

The debates across Emerging Markets on day 1 and Wholesale Telecom on days 2 demonstrated a wide range of opinion as well as giving the opportunity for some great video interviews (available shortly) from Total TeleVision and briefings from participants to gathered Total Telecom editors. The resulting stories can be read online...
And yes a tale of scrapyards was included by AA Telco who are running a scheme called SecondLife in Uganda.

The feeling of freedom

We've started calling for entries for the 2010 World Communication Awards and if the branding is anything to go by, this should be our best event ever...

17 categories this year, including two voted by the industry, so we'll be hoping to beat the 2009 total of more than 250 entries. Make sure you submit yours before the deadline of 2nd July 2010.

Thanks to the sponsors already confirmed, including:

WCA Animation

At last weeks World Communication Awards, Orange joined Total Telecom in celebrating a Decade of Excellence by creating a short film of telecom landmarks.

The film was played out during the gala evening, but if you weren't able to attend, or want to see it again, it's now available on Total Telecom

The tenth World Communication Awards saw major players including BT, Orange, Belgacom, O2, and Bharti Airtel celebrating their success, as well as a strong showing from companies such as Safaricom, Etisalat, and Turkcell. A full list of the winners and highly commended companies is available online.

Orange named Best Global Operator

What a great night last night turned out to be. More than 500 of the telecom industries elite gathered at the Hilton on Park Lane, London to see this years winners of the World Communication Awards unveiled.

Guest speakers included Pen Hadow, the arctic environmentalist and explorer, and Krishnan Guru Murthy proved to be an excellent MC and demonstrated why he has appeared as a guest on comedy quiz shows including 'Have I got news for you' (quote of the night, KGM "I love an awards ceremony where I can call Bill Gates and Steve Jobs losers")

After all the glitz, Orange and Bharti Airtel came out as the big winners with two trophies each.
The full list was as follows:
Best Brand: Bharti Airtel Ltd.
Best Content Service: MINICK Group
Best Customer Care: BT Group
Best Managed Service: NTT Communications
Best Mobile Operator : Bharti Airtel Ltd.
Best New Service : SpinVox
Best Operator in a Developing Market: Afsat Communications
Best Project Management: Orange Business Services

The Convergence Award: BT 21CN
Best Changemaker: Vishvas Sethi - Botswana Telecommunications Corporation
Best Wholesale Carrier: TeliaSonera International Carrier
Best Global Operator : Orange Business Services
Most influential person: Viviane Reding, EU Commissioner, EU

Once again the WCA proved to be a night to really unite the big hitters with a range of senior telco execs including Osamu Inoue of NTT, Barbara Dalibard of Orange, Malin Frenning of TeliaSonera, Ofer Gneezy of iBasis, and Daniel Kurgan of Belgacom to name just five of those present.

2008 is the 10th year of the WCA, so watch this space to keep up with the plans...
