16 fantastic presenters... can you put them in the right order?

Over at Total Telecom Towers we've been reminiscing about great and not so great presenters of the
World Communication Awards, and with much scratching of heads we came up with 15 fine examples of the breed (that's the awards hosting breed), but try as we might, we couldn't figure out number 16. In the end, just as we were about to 'Ask the audience' I came across it, but would you have remembered?

So just for fun - can you put the correct presenter with the correct year.

Before Christmas, we set this up as a survey to see how many people could get all the presenters in the right order, and amazingly no one did, it was that 1999 presenters that got everyone...

So to put you out of your misery, here's the answers, in the form of an infographic - you can view a larger version on Total Telecom

The 7 brand campaigns leading the telecoms world #TTFest #WCA14

WCA Category spotlight: Best Brand Campaign

The World Communication Awards are just under a month away and we can’t hide our excitement!
With the biggest party in global telecoms almost here, Total Telecom will be putting together a series of category spotlights. Where each post will focus on a particular awards category, giving you with the key information you need to know about the categories, finalists and the awards. We’ll kick things off with the today with the Best Brand Campaign category.

    Finalists
    BT – BT Sport
    Roshan – New Heights
EE Mobile – Biggest, Fastest, Best
Idea Cellular – Idea Internet All India
    Ooredoo – Ooredoo
    Orange – Go Europe
    Smart Communications – Jump In

    BT – BT Sport
BT Sport is BT’s new sport offering; three channels, BT Sport 1, BT Sport 2 and ESPN showing exclusive sports content including the Barclays Premier League, Aviva Rugby Premiership and Moto GP.
As well as just sport provision, they’ve also teamed up with high profile celebrity experts such as Claire Balding, Brian O’Driscoll and Jake Humphrey, offering the very best in broadcasting and helping the BT to its best year-on-year business performance in 10 years.

    Roshan – New Heights
Brand campaigns in Afghanistan are few and far between, with the majority of them focusing on products, promotions or services. Roshan, did the unthinkable and launched the ‘New Heights’ campaign, celebrating 10 years of operations in Afghanistan, and the part they’ve played in the rebuilding of the economic development of the country.
Focusing on television, Roshan created a 60-second television commercial, illustrating the emotion the region- including its socioeconomic impact on jobs, finance and education, tugging at the viewership’s heartstrings. All in all, celebrating what customers and the country can do with mobile and how Afghanistan as a whole has reached ‘New Heights’.

EE Mobile – Biggest, Fastest, Best
Ahead of 4G launches from rival companies EE launched ‘Biggest, Fastest, Best’. A campaign demonstrating the commercial success and industry-leading capabilities of its network, with its world leading speeds and amazing coverage of the British population.
Making use of viral videos, #SuperfastSarnie Twitter challenge completion and of course television and cinema adverts. Not forgetting teaming up with Hollywood A-List actor Kevin Bacon to really legitimise the brand image.

Idea Cellular – Idea Internet All India
The 3rd largest mobile operator in India, launched the ‘Idea Internet All India’ campaign to build the category of mobile internet services in India.
The campaign builds on a simple cultural insight – “in India, people easily fall prey to everyday small cons for lack of information”. Internet is a great information leveller and Idea used this insight to drive the message. The Big Idea was- “India mein ab No Ullu banaoing”, meaning “now no one can make a fool of anyone in India”. The communication ended with the message “Idea Internet All India” dramatized by the catchphrase “har mobile par internet, what an idea!” (English: Internet on every mobile, what an idea!).

    Ooredoo – Ooredoo
The Ooredoo brand was launched during the GSMA Mobile World Congress 2013 in order to deliver maximum impact and the launch saw a series of renowned speakers such as Cherie Blair and Dr. Hamadoun Toure of ITU take part.
Ooredoo wanted to unleash the potential of its customers throughout the group to go beyond simply connecting people to helping people achieve their full potential and supporting human growth in all its dimensions. Overall, Ooredoo recognises the potential of communications to transform lives by empowering people– and that supported the choice of the new brand and name.

    Orange – Go Europe
‘Go Europe’ is a series of new roaming offers that Orange started offering in 2013 to simplify roaming charges for customers in Europe and are designed specifically to instill confidence in customers by guaranteeing that there will be no surprises.
At a time of phenomenal innovation in the telecoms market, the issue of roaming continues to be a sore spot for the industry due to a historical legacy of customers who have faced unexpectedly large bills.
With this in mind, Orange wanted to drive customer adoption of its roaming services up by making them more affordable and eradicating the associated fear of running up large bills. Simplicity and transparent pricing.

    Smart Communications – Jump In
The Jump In campaign was aimed to encourage the youth to “Jump In,” to go for their dreams and embrace change – such as a change in cellular networks – that would enable them to “Live More,” in line with Smart’s overarching brand campaign.
The campaign had to make Smart relevant to them while establishing that it is young and cool, and that it spoke their language. Jump In sparked record-breaking buzz and online conversations for the brand, making it one of the most talked about launches of 2013.

To find out who will win Best Brand Campaign then you need to book your place for the World Communication Awards now. Keep an eye out for more Category Spotlights on The Editor’s Cut.

WCA Winner's Report: Ciena - The Innovation Award 2013

In the build up to the opening of this year's World Communication Awards. We've been speaking to last year's winners to get the inside track about their winning entry. Follow our series of 'Winner's Reports' over the next few weeks.

Next up: Ciena (GeoMesh) - The Innovation Award 2013

    Please summarise your winning entry

Ciena’s GeoMesh leverages multiple industry-leading technologies with field-proven pedigrees for robustness and reliability in the areas of optical transport and switching intelligence into a seamless global network solution that addresses current and future global connectivity needs. GeoMesh simplifies the PoP-to-PoP transport layer by leveraging coherent transmission and ROADM-based Optical Bypass, while adding service intelligence and the robustness of an intelligent switching layer, governed by the OneConnect control plane. This unique combination of industry-leading technologies yields global networking solutions that unite submarine and terrestrial networks like never before. For the first time, networks operators can significantly simplify their global network designs overland and undersea, increase network capacity via simple 100 Gb/s channel upgrades, and bolster network resilience, even in the face of inevitable natural and manmade network faults. GeoMesh epitomizes the convergence of submarine and terrestrial network technologies, yielding previously impossible economies of scale across the entire network. GeoMesh has removed the technological barriers that once forced global network operators to design two network types, submarine and terrestrial, and then inefficiently hand off traffic between the two network types. GeoMesh allows network operators for the first time ever to design and build networks that span upwards of 10,000km and even longer, using a common set of technologies operating at 100G rates.

How do you feel your product or service differentiates from its competitors?

The three building block technologies that comprise GeoMesh are all revolutionary technology innovations in their own right. However, what makes GeoMesh truly unique, and provides so numerous coveted benefits to the many tier 1 network operators who have rapidly adopted these technologies, is when they are combined into a single GeoMesh network solution. It is the combined industry-leading hardware and software innovations that make GeoMesh revolutionary and thus unique in the industry with no equivalent offerings from any other network vendor.

What further innovations do you see in the area of your entry in 2014 and beyond?

A significant and growing portion of traffic carried over both submarine and terrestrial networks is cloud computing traffic flowing between large data centers. Now that GeoMesh has successfully united submarine and terrestrial networks to the benefit of both service provider and end users alike, the next targeted innovation is to integrate dynamic bandwidth-on-demand capabilities that maximize end-to-end bandwidth utilization, while enabling innovative new services that differentiate on attributes other than just price. Looking further into the future, SDN and NFV are also additions to the GeoMesh solution that are being investigated.

WCA Winner's Report: Virtela - Best Customer Care 2013

In the build up to the opening of this year's World Communication Awards. We've been speaking to last year's winners to get the inside track about their winning entry. Follow our series of 'Winner's Reports' over the next few weeks.

First up; Virtela - Best Customer Care 2013.

    Please summarise your winning entry.

Virtela, the leading global cloud networking company, offers an extensive suite of services – including managed networks, security, application acceleration, mobile device management and IT infrastructure management. These managed services are enabled by Virtela’s multi-carrier overlay network and Enterprise Services Cloud (ESC) platform, with Local Cloud Centers (LCCs) around the world that dynamically deliver services closest to enterprise end-users for the highest performance and lowest cost of ownership.

As a company that is driving cloud IT innovation, Virtela’s number one priority has always been, and will continue to be, its customers, which is why this past year, it created the Customer Excellence Program, bolstering its already industry-leading Customer Care Program. Based on customer and internal feedback loops and policing the processes and systems, this new quality assurance program allows Virtela to accelerate continuous improvements in how it delivers customer care.

Year after year, Virtela’s support team creates new standards for itself as well as the industry. And, each year, Virtela dramatically outperforms these service guarantees, pushing the envelope for customer care and service excellence. For example, in 2012, Virtela's support team improved the speed to answer customer calls by nearly 50 percent, answering first calls within an average of 6.4 seconds, down from 12 seconds in 2011. This is just one of many dramatic improvements Virtela has made in the past year.

Virtela has been recognized globally for its proactive Customer Care Program, which is driven by its world-class support team, who customers view as an extension of their own IT team.

How do you feel your product or service differentiates from its competitors?

Virtela maintains three Global Operations Centers staffed around the clock with IT experts who proactively monitor, inspect, detect and analyze customer networks and IT infrastructure to ensure global customers experience the highest levels of uptime.  Virtela asserts no other service provider will be as highly responsive to customers’ needs - be it service quotes, service delivery, change requests, billing, or service issues. For Virtela, it doesn't matter who, what, when, where or why there's an issue, the support team goes the extra mile to resolve it, and fast. In fact, 95 percent of customer survey respondents in 2012 said they were highly satisfied or satisfied with Virtela's resolution of their issues.

What further innovations do you see in the area of your entry in 2014 and beyond?

Virtela is committed to continuous improvement and innovation in customer care. In 2014, Virtela will challenge itself to continue to outperform its already industry-leading metrics -- such as 99% of trouble tickets opened proactively, 99% of issues resolved at first call, and 95% of potential issues identified and resolved before they impact network health -- through additional automation, predictive analytics technologies, and mobility features for further enhancement of proactive support.

Will the real WCA please stand up #WCA13

It has come to our attention that there may be some confusion over which awards WCA refers to, so we want to add some clarity so you can reassure yourself you were at the World Communication Awards.

    A few simple tests:

    1. Did any of the finalists include the Bleating Heart, Cropwell Bishop Creamery, or Two Hoots Cheese? If so, there is a strong possibility that you were at the World Cheese Awards [http://worldcheeseawards.com] where the winners included Gruyère Premier Cru, Blue Stilton and Fat Bottom Girl!

    2. If every award was won by Tunisia, and the evening degenerated into a fight, you were probably at the (possibly fictional) World Countries Awards

    3. If you enjoyed great company of hundreds of fellow telecom professionals from around the world, entertainment from the spectacular choir and saw companies including AT&T, Orange Business Services and Tata Communications named as winners, relax you were at the World Communication Awards!

To see the complete roll of honour and to download the winners magazine, visit Total Telecom

Why must you be the Best Place to Work? #Engagement

The A-Z of telecom operators have been submitting responses for the 2013 Best Place to Work survey (#BPTW) but whilst almost every major operator from across the globe is represented, many do not have the necessary 50 employee responses to be in the running for the award.

    Employee Engagement
So what makes employees want to complete a survey about their company? It certainly isn't the Total Telecom incentive (for the record - there isn't one), but it almost certainly is driven by the thorny issue of engagement.

Across the web there are experts and commentators talking about employee engagement and how it is vital for employers, but fundamentally you can summerise this by saying the best places to work have the most engaged employees, and this is because these are companies that understand and try to foster attributes including, but not limited to:

    • trying to understand what employees think and feel
    • demonstrating appreciation of the effort put in (not just money!)
    • great communication
    • commitment to employee development
So in a world where up to 40% of employees are disengaged (BlessingWhite Research 2013) it makes sense for you to be one of the companies recognised as being a great place to work.
