The 6 most innovative companies making the most of G.fast technology

LEARN ALL ABOUT GIGABIT COPPER

G.fast has the green light but are you making the most of it?

In December the International Telecommunications Union ratified G.fast and certification is rumoured to be scheduled for the autumn. But is the telecoms community moving fast enough to take advantage of this technology?
Here are just some of the most innovative companies utilising G.fast technology.

Sckipio Technologies
The Israeli start-up founded to focus on G.fast technology is the current leader in this field. They have been working with many ODMs and service providers to accelerate the growing demand for G.fast technology.
And at International CES 2015, Sckipio demonstrated the first demo of ultra high definition television using G.fast technology over a G.fast broadband network.

ADTRAN
With the launching of its G.fast product by the second quarter of 2015 ADTRAN is taking G.fast from concept to reality. ADTRAN and G.fast are particularly active in Europe due to the difficulty of deploying all-fibre networks in part of Europe and telcos in the region are incredibly eager to utilise the technology and ADTRAN are making the most of the demand.

Broadcom
Broadcom have revealed a G.fast chipset family and G.fast capabilities for its gateway system on a chip. Providing the highest density approach for end-to-end G.fast equipment design.
As one of the first vendors to launch G.fast deployments, Broadcom has already made some vital ground in this relatively unknown market.

Alcatel-Lucent
Alcatel-Lucent’s ultra-broadband G.fast solution is set to become available early this year and will allow operators to provide their subscribers with much faster internet services. This means that operators can get fibre-like speeds over copper and rolled out to as many people as possible.
Alcatel-Lucent continue to push the boundaries further, as their Bell Labs has most recently demonstrated the capabilities of XG-FAST, extending the possibilities of copper even further.

Huawei and BT
One of the biggest waves in G.fast technology came when Huawei and BT trialled G.fast in a UK residential community. Whilst the trial encountered difficulties, there is no doubt that it accelerated the commercialisation of G.fast and brought us to where we are now.

These are just some of the key innovators utilising G.fast technology and these innovations will be discussed at Gigabit Copper conference 25th March, Sheraton Munich Arabellapark, Munich. The place where we can explore a variety of DSL technologies, provide a platform to understand the most appropriate places for roll out and discuss the future business model once G.fast has been deployed.

The World Communication Awards are just under a month away and we can’t hide our excitement!
With the biggest party in global telecoms almost here, Total Telecom will be putting together a series of category spotlights. Where each post will focus on a particular awards category, giving you with the key information you need to know about the categories, finalists and the awards. We’ll kick things off with the today with the Best Brand Campaign category.

Finalists
BT – BT Sport
Roshan – New Heights
EE Mobile – Biggest, Fastest, Best
Idea Cellular – Idea Internet All India
Ooredoo – Ooredoo
Orange – Go Europe
Smart Communications – Jump In

BT – BT Sport
BT Sport is BT’s new sport offering; three channels, BT Sport 1, BT Sport 2 and ESPN showing exclusive sports content including the Barclays Premier League, Aviva Rugby Premiership and Moto GP.
As well as just sport provision, they’ve also teamed up with high profile celebrity experts such as Claire Balding, Brian O’Driscoll and Jake Humphrey, offering the very best in broadcasting and helping the BT to its best year-on-year business performance in 10 years.

Roshan – New Heights
Brand campaigns in Afghanistan are few and far between, with the majority of them focusing on products, promotions or services. Roshan, did the unthinkable and launched the ‘New Heights’ campaign, celebrating 10 years of operations in Afghanistan, and the part they’ve played in the rebuilding of the economic development of the country.
Focusing on television, Roshan created a 60-second television commercial, illustrating the emotion the region- including its socioeconomic impact on jobs, finance and education, tugging at the viewership’s heartstrings. All in all, celebrating what customers and the country can do with mobile and how Afghanistan as a whole has reached ‘New Heights’.

EE Mobile – Biggest, Fastest, Best
Ahead of 4G launches from rival companies EE launched ‘Biggest, Fastest, Best’. A campaign demonstrating the commercial success and industry-leading capabilities of its network, with its world leading speeds and amazing coverage of the British population.
Making use of viral videos, #SuperfastSarnie Twitter challenge completion and of course television and cinema adverts. Not forgetting teaming up with Hollywood A-List actor Kevin Bacon to really legitimise the brand image.

Idea Cellular – Idea Internet All India
The 3rd largest mobile operator in India, launched the ‘Idea Internet All India’ campaign to build the category of mobile internet services in India.
The campaign builds on a simple cultural insight – “in India, people easily fall prey to everyday small cons for lack of information”. Internet is a great information leveller and Idea used this insight to drive the message. The Big Idea was- “India mein ab No Ullu banaoing”, meaning “now no one can make a fool of anyone in India”. The communication ended with the message “Idea Internet All India” dramatized by the catchphrase “har mobile par internet, what an idea!” (English: Internet on every mobile, what an idea!).

Ooredoo – Ooredoo
The Ooredoo brand was launched during the GSMA Mobile World Congress 2013 in order to deliver maximum impact and the launch saw a series of renowned speakers such as Cherie Blair and Dr. Hamadoun Toure of ITU take part.
Ooredoo wanted to unleash the potential of its customers throughout the group to go beyond simply connecting people to helping people achieve their full potential and supporting human growth in all its dimensions. Overall, Ooredoo recognises the potential of communications to transform lives by empowering people– and that supported the choice of the new brand and name.

Orange – Go Europe
‘Go Europe’ is a series of new roaming offers that Orange started offering in 2013 to simplify roaming charges for customers in Europe and are designed specifically to instill confidence in customers by guaranteeing that there will be no surprises.
At a time of phenomenal innovation in the telecoms market, the issue of roaming continues to be a sore spot for the industry due to a historical legacy of customers who have faced unexpectedly large bills.
With this in mind, Orange wanted to drive customer adoption of its roaming services up by making them more affordable and eradicating the associated fear of running up large bills. Simplicity and transparent pricing.

Smart Communications – Jump In
The Jump In campaign was aimed to encourage the youth to “Jump In,” to go for their dreams and embrace change – such as a change in cellular networks – that would enable them to “Live More,” in line with Smart’s overarching brand campaign.
The campaign had to make Smart relevant to them while establishing that it is young and cool, and that it spoke their language. Jump In sparked record-breaking buzz and online conversations for the brand, making it one of the most talked about launches of 2013.

To find out who will win Best Brand Campaign then you need to book your place for the World Communication Awards now. Keep an eye out for more Category Spotlights on The Editor’s Cut.

Why should you care about IPX

Isabelle Paradis - Hot Telecom, Conference ChairThere's a lot of smoke and mirrors surround IP Exchange or IPX, so it's good to look towards some of the technical product documents. This document is actually quite easy to read and briefly explains that service providers, whether they are Mobile or Fixed Network operators have a critical need for a new interconnect environment to handle a wide range of IP services and that IPX provides a commercial and technical solution to manage IP traffic.
GSMA's

The GSMA also go on to point out that IPX fulfils a number of key principles vital for a successful and sustainable IP Interworking solution:

  • That any potential player in the delivery of IP services - MNOs, FNOs, Carriers and ISPs - has the freedom of choice to be involved.
  • Reliable and secure delivery of services with agreed QoS levels
  • A fair commercial return for parties who meet their obligations in the value chain
  • Efficient Connectivity - the IPX is a Gateway to a managed IP network - managing data flow and commercial information and providing the benefits of multilateral connectivity to all players.

  • Moving on from the worthy principles brings us to the research conducted recently by IPX experts Hot Telecom, What Customers Think and Want, which was based on interviews with 70 CSP's and flags that 65% of the respondents plan to be using IPX services by the end of 2015 (Download the EXECUTIVE SUMMARY)

Both the GSMA and Hot Telecom are speaking at the Total Telecom IPX Summit in London on the 10 October 2013. To find out more, DOWNLOAD THE BROCHURE

Unlocking the growth potential in Emerging Markets, how do you overcome the challenges?

If the past 12 months are an indication of the future, 2012 looks set to be another exciting and unpredictable year for both business and technology. At the forefront for many Telco’s at the moment, is how to unlock the growth potential in emerging markets, however there are several hurdles to be overcome according to some of the top execs in India, Africa and Brazil.

Mobile operators in some of the world’s largest emerging markets claim that the high cost of devices is preventing them from extending services to millions of unconnected would be customers. “SIM card penetration in India stands at 74% but in real terms less than 50% of the population has a mobile phone”, said Rajiv Bawa, head of Telenor India, at the latest Mobile World Congress Show in Barcelona. This leaves a potential market of 600-700million people without mobile connections for operators to target.

Mary Lennighan wrote in a recently published article on www.totaltele.com that, In China too, smart phone penetration is only 10%, Android based smart phones are being adopted at a rapid rate by consumers and although people are embracing the mobile internet with over 354million subscribers, a staggering 89% still use 2G connections. The story is similar in Brazil, where Claro generates 15% of its revenues from mobile internet services; however penetration of mobile broadband capable devices is just 12%.

The biggest challenge according to Marco Quatorze, VAS and International Roaming Director at parent company America Movil, in these markets is to “work with the diversity of its customer base, where the potential market ranges from subscribers using mobile data services on smartphones connected to LTE Networks, to those who live in areas without electricity”, bridging this digital divide in these regions is top of the agenda for several Telco’s.

The other challenge also arises from a lack of spectrum harmonisation, offering devices which are capable of operating on multiple platforms ranging from 2G to LTE is difficult but could be the turning point in terms of unlocking potential customers and extending mobile penetration in these regions. The next wave of growth could be spurned by an increased focus on innovation. Roll out of new products and investment in expansion of data services and value added services such as M-Pesa or other mobile financial solutions, and indeed mHealth, which according to the GSMA will generate £1.2billion by 2017, are expected to create significant growth.

Much has been made of the opportunities presented by the BRIC economies, but for Telco’s looking to explore opportunities outside of their domestic markets these are not the only emerging markets to watch; Breakfast with Total Telecom, taking place on the on the 10th of April will examine some of the hottest high growth-markets globally and explore how opportunities vary with location.

    Speakers include:

    ·         Tom Homer, CEO-EMEA, Telstra International
    ·         Stephen Kelly, General Manager - Asia Pacific, North America, Middle East and Africa, BT Global Telecom Markets (GTM)
    ·         David MolonyPrincipal AnalystOvum
    ·         James TookeHead of Strategy and DevelopmentCable & Wireless Communications
    ·         Laurent ViviezVP and Partner AT Kearney

Breakfast with Total Telecom is free for operators and services providers. Find out more about participating or sponsoring at www.totaltele.com/breakfast, or for more in the Emerging Markets space, come along to Total Telecom Wireless World on the 13 & 14 June 2012.

The annual Global 100 Operator report published by Total Telecom is the definitive who's who guide to the largest telecom operators in the world.

This year the Top 10 saw two go up, one go down and seven stay the same, the most significant being the rise of six places by América Móvil into the top 10.

The complete Top 10 list looks like this:
    1. AT&T
    2. NTT
    3. Verizon
    4. Deutsche Telekom
    5. Telefónica
    6. China Mobile
    7. Vodafone
    8. France Telecom
    9. América Móvil
    10. KDDI
You can download the entire Global 100 from Total Telecom

Of course revenue and profit is not the only measure of success, and this year we've seen different approaches rewarded, including:

AT&T (#1) CEO, Randall L Stephenson named CEO of the Year at the World Communication Awards (view his acceptance video)

BT Global Services (#15) named Best Global Operator at the 2012 World Communication Awards

Singtel (#28) named the Users Choice at the 2012 World Communication Awards (find out more about the Gap to Winner report to see how you measure up to Singtel)

Vodafone (#7) named the most valuable brand in telecom in our annual ranking of the 500 most valuable brands in telecoms.

It will be interesting to see how the winners shape up in 2012...

It's a wrap! Awards and Conference complete

The 13th annual World Communication Awards and first ever Total Telecom World conference are over for another year, so time to take a deep breath and relax. No chance, it's time to start working on Total Telecom Wireless World for June 2012!

Eighteen categories were awarded, with the highlights being the emergence of UPC Austria as the winner in two categories, Team of the Year and Best Customer Care, and the naming of Randall L. Stephenson of AT&T as CEO of the Year. Randall unfortunately was unable to make the awards, but did send us personal video message.

There is great press coverage of the awards this year, in particular the BBC were very quick off the mark to cover BT's win of Project of the Year for Superfast Cornwall.

Almost 500 people attended this years awards dinner at the London Hilton on Park Lane where Andrew Neil demonstrated just what makes him such a popular commentator and presenter with his unique blend of topical, humourous, and the slightly cutting - especially if you happen to work for Orange.  You can view all the winners and highly commended companies on the website at www.worldcommsawards.com

Many of those who attended the awards also participated in the inaugural Total Telecom World conference where they were moved and inspired by Karim Khoja's story of telecoms in Afghanistan, as well as getting great insight from Ed Richards, CEO of Ofcom and the opportunity to hear first hand from Nigel Stagg, the new CEO of BT Wholesale in his first conference presentation.

Panel discussions in particular were lively with candid views expressed by the likes of Jeremy Boardman of Rothschild (Any new UK fibre investors would be 'certifiable'), whilst David Haigh of Brand Finance was described by one participant as making the other panellists 'squirm'!

An eventful two days, when all's said and done...

    Say Cheese

Flash bulbs welcomed the winners, cameras rolled, and Cornish Blue reigns supreme - apparently. A coincidence of timing meant attendees at the World Communication Awards tweeting hashtag #WCA were sharing a tag with the World Cheese Awards!

Despite this one minor glitch, and more generous use of the alternative #worldcommsawards, twitter has been alive with news of this years WCA, including the success of BT - you can catch up with the latest HERE

It was a great night all round, Mary Knightingale was a popular and effective host, whilst Big Ocean Bands really upped the tempo...

So all that remains is congratulations to all the winners, including the big winners on the night BT, Orange Business Services and Verizon. You can view the full list of winners on the website: www.worldcommsawards.com

    Passion, Interest, and Scrap Yards

This weeks meeting of the World Telecoms Council brought together another strong group of participants from players including BT, Tata, Belgacom, Orange, UK Broadband, Tellabs and more.

Debate was always interesting and as this strip of images of Nicholas Topham (BroadGroup) leading a session, observed by Joe Kelly (BT Wholesale) illustrates - sometimes impassioned!

The debates across Emerging Markets on day 1 and Wholesale Telecom on days 2 demonstrated a wide range of opinion as well as giving the opportunity for some great video interviews (available shortly) from Total TeleVision and briefings from participants to gathered Total Telecom editors. The resulting stories can be read online...
And yes a tale of scrapyards was included by AA Telco who are running a scheme called SecondLife in Uganda.
