Second ranking was the proof that there is clearly news more important than football to come from Brazil as Telefonica and Telecom Italia clash over the Spanish incumbent reportedly still pushing for break-up of TIM Brasil.

Third on the hit list is the news that Vodafone New Zealand is to trial 4G small cells in July whilst fourth was the report that the GSMA chief, Anne Bouverot, sees more consolidation ahead but warns against strict remedies, whilst 3 cannot see cost benefit of cross-border M&A in Europe.

Telecom Genius or Could Do Better?

So did you take our telecom quiz before Christmas? All the answers were in the End of Year Review, but for those who didn't quite manage to wade their way through it, here's the easy way to the results.

So how did you do? Were you one of the 77% who doesn't know what level mobile penetration has reached in Africa? Or one of the 33% who think Huawei will be the most successful traditional network infrastructure vendor in 2013? (According to Ovum they won't be!) Were you one of the 12% who thought Simon Moutter has taken over at Telefonica? Or perhaps most surprisingly one of 40% who think Vodafone used this image in their advertising....

Check out the answers, and if your honest response is that you could have done better, why not register for the Total Telecom Daily Newsletter It's totally free and will help make you a telecom genius by the end of 2013!

From Russia with Love #FinanceSummit

OK, so we can't promise Mr Bond, but at the Total Telecom Finance Summit on the 10 & 11 October you can meet Henk van Dalen, the CFO of leading Russian operator, VimpelCom.

His keynote on the morning of day 1 provides provides a futuristic vision of the telecom finance and investment landscape in 2013 and beyond, something he's well qualified to comment on considering that in July alone VimpelCom have announced several major and innovative initiatives. These include:

  • a global M2M alliance with partners at KPN, NTT Docomo, Rogers, SingTel, Telefonica, and Telstra aimed at increasing their capability to offer better value propositions to their customers in different markets and geographies.
  • have won one of four wins LTE licenses in Russia
This type of initiative is illustrative of the type of experiences you will be able to hear about and discuss at the Finance Summit, living up to the strapline of "Best practice finance strategies for global telecoms".
