Competition, Ericsson, Kiwi's and Relish - Start your #telecom week with the news you need

Start your week in telecom with a round up of top stories from Total Telecom.

Kicking off the proceedings with Ericsson who last Tuesday predicted an LTE uptake gap between Europe, North America - the most read story of the week.

Second ranking was the proof that there is clearly news more important than football to come from Brazil as Telefonica and Telecom Italia clash over the Spanish incumbent reportedly still pushing for break-up of TIM Brasil.

Third on the hit list is the news that Vodafone New Zealand is to trial 4G small cells in July whilst fourth was the report that the GSMA chief, Anne Bouverot, sees more consolidation ahead but warns against strict remedies, whilst 3 cannot see cost benefit of cross-border M&A in Europe.

Finally relishing it's position in the top 5, UK Broadband claims consumers and SMEs are wasting £193 million per year on unwanted landline rental fees.

Airtel Africa: The Real Reason Why Network Management Matters

Ericsson have recently won the contract to transform the network of Bharti Airtel in Nigeria. This is an end-to-end network transformation program across its mobile operations, including network management.

In an article on AfriqueJet Actualité Afrique, Chief Technical Officer, Airtel Africa, Eben Albertyn explained why the programme mattered, which is in itself a great explanation of why network management really matters:

""The customer is at the core of everything we do at Airtel. The implementation of this transformation program will enable us to further enrich our customer experience across the region. It allows us to provide Airtel subscribers with the best network possible while meeting the growing usage of mobile data."

A day of mixed fortunes #WVA2012

It was a day of mixed fortunes for Alcatel-Lucent as shares fell sharply on reports of a wider operating loss but there was brighter news in the evening as UK & Ireland CEO, Lucy Dimes, lifted two trophies at the prestigous World Vendor Awards.

First up came Best Content Solution for their Digital Media Store, to be followed up by one of the highlights of the evening, CEO of the Year for Ben Verwaayen. Ben unfortunately couldn't make it to the dinner (something to do with first quarter results - see above!) but did send an acceptance video which you can watch. You can also read an interview with Ben Verwaayen conducted by ETNODigital on Total Telecom.

Joining Alcatel-Lucent at the World vendor Awards were a raft of other excited winners, including both the biggest in the industry (ZTE, Ericsson, Syniverse etc) and some less well known names such as fonYou, ADTRAN, and Momac.
